LEAD DESIGN ENGINEER
POSITION PURPOSE:
- Responsible for the design of new products and leading design engineering teams.
DIMENSIONS:
- Exempt position, professional position reporting to the Director of Engineering.
- This is a leadership position that under broad directions works with internal and external customers to design and develop new technologies and products.
- Scope of development may require work as an individual contributor or team leader.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develop 3D designs of new technologies, new products, and modifications of existing products to meet customer needs, UL and IEC regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to design engineers.
- Evaluate 3D design concepts using Failure Mode Affect Analysis, Finite Elements Analysis and Mold Flow modeling software.
- Develop design prototypes, and perform preliminary mechanical and electrical testing of concepts to verify design intent.
- Execute detailed tolerance analysis of designs to insure design function, manufacturing capability and quality.
- Work in conjunction with the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Manufacturing department and Quality department to develop product cost, tooling cost and regulatory compliance costs for assigned projects.
- Work in conjunction with vendors and quality department to verify first article of new products.
- Setup schedules for testing of first article samples to verify design.
- Provide technical support to corrective action process as assigned.
- Develop and execute experiments to analyze product failure root cause.
- Provide support of engineering team in areas of personal technical concentration.
- Review and interpret customer specifications.
- Participate as a member or leader of a Cross functional team and /or Project Team as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- BSME minimum education, MSME preferred.
- 10 years minimum experience in the design of electromechanical components.
- Expert level Solidworks user with proficiency in the use of Cosmos, Moldflow and MS office.
- Knowledge of the design of injection-molded parts and electrical contacts.
- Must have working knowledge of ISO 9001 requirements, UL, CSA and IEC specifications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Usual office working conditions.
- Regularly required to sit and stand, and move about the facility.
- Required to be able to read documents and computer screens.
- Occasional exposure to Engineering Lab, shipping and receiving, production elements such as dust and noise.
