Design engineers are evaluating new power architectures capable of supporting higher rack densities.

800 VDC is emerging as one of the most promising near-term approaches. By reducing current requirements, minimizing conversion losses, and enabling higher power delivery, 800 VDC offers a compelling path forward for hyperscale data centers. However, the transition is not as simple as selecting a new voltage. Significant questions remain around standardization, connector requirements, safety practices, and infrastructure design.

This article will cover topics including:

What is 800 VDC Data Center Power Distribution?

Why Data Centers are Moving Toward Higher-Voltage DC Architectures

The Standardization Gaps with 800 VDC

Safety and LVDC: What Safety Challenges Must be Addressed?

What New Technology Will Support the 800 VDC Transition?

What 800 VDC Means for Data Center Power Connectors

What Saf-D-Grid® Connectors Support High-Power Data Centers?

What is 800 VDC Data Center Power Distribution?

800 VDC is an emerging power distribution architecture that is being adopted in next-generation AI data centers. By raising the distribution voltage, 800 VDC provides significant power density gains and reduces the number of AC-DC conversion stages.

In contrast, traditional data center power distribution typically relies on high-voltage three-phase AC power from the grid undergoing a series of conversions. Power is ultimately distributed within the rack at 48 VDC or 56 VDC and then stepped down further at the server level. As rack densities increase, this approach is no longer practical for future AI systems.

800 VDC is one proposed solution to improve rack density, but it is important to note that 800 VDC is not one single architecture. Rather, it is a voltage level around which multiple implementation approaches are emerging.

As a recent article in Data Center Dynamics puts it, “800VDC is often being discussed as if it were a tried and tested replacement for traditional power distribution methodologies when working with these densities. It is not, and should be better understood as an emerging power ecosystem.”

Topics under discussion include:

Whether designers should adopt differential +800 VDC or bipolar +/-400 VDC wiring arrangements

Where AC power should be converted to 800 VDC and how much existing AC infrastructure should remain

How the system should be grounded

Where energy storage systems should be located

How redundancy, safety, and maintenance should be handled

To examine the first bullet, wiring arrangements are one 800 VDC topic where there remains no true industry consensus. The two primary wiring approaches include:

Differential +800 VDC: This approach uses a two-wire arrangement that carries the full voltage difference between conductors.

Bipolar +/-400 VDC: This approach uses a positive 400 VDC wire, negative 400 VDC wire, and a midpoint, current-carrying conductor in a three-wire arrangement. While this approach is flexible because it can support both 400 VDC and 800 VDC loads, the drawback is the extra wire takes up additional space. One example of this approach is the Open Compute Project’s (OCP) Diablo 400 Specification, which standardizes a power rack with nominal +/-400VDC output.

The boundary of 800 VDC itself is also not defined. Design engineers are exploring several approaches, including rack-side 800 VDC, row-level 800 VDC, and facility-wide 800 VDC.

Rack-side 800 VDC is easiest to retrofit into existing data centers and thus likely to emerge first. This approach uses power racks (also known as “sidecars”), which are dedicated cabinets located adjacent to the IT rack. They can house AC-to-800 VDC conversion equipment, protection devices, controls, monitoring systems, batteries, capacitors, and the connections supplying power to nearby compute infrastructure. On the Diablo 400 Specification, for example, a dedicated power rack converts AC into +/- 400 VDC and feeds one or more AI racks through short cables and busbars. This approach confines 800 VDC to individual racks, allowing the existing upstream AC power architecture to remain largely unchanged. It also reduces congestion inside IT racks by moving conversion equipment outside the computing enclosure.

Row-level 800 VDC converts power to 800 VDC at the row level and distributes it across multiple racks. Row-level distribution could be achieved through technology like an overhead DC busway.

Facility-wide 800 VDC proposes running the entire power train on 800 VDC, ideally converting AC to DC power right when it enters the building. Emerging technologies such as industrial-grade rectifiers or solid-state transformers would convert incoming AC to 800 VDC. The final DC-to-DC conversion would occur as close as possible to the GPUs and processors being powered. Because this approach shifts more DC architecture from data center white space into gray space, facility-wide 800 VDC is the most hindered by current technology and standard gaps and likely to emerge last.

Why Data Centers are Moving Toward Higher-Voltage DC Architectures

The growing interest in 800 VDC stems from a fundamental engineering principle: power equals voltage multiplied by current (P = V x I). An arc flash occurs when an electrical current jumps outside its insulated conductor (typically through the air), creating a dangerous burst of energy with temperatures that can exceed the surface of the sun.

Arc flash safety calculations are addressed in IEEE 1584, but this protocol is based upon the characteristics of AC power. For example, alternating current runs through zero twice per cycle, which helps to extinguish an arc. Direct current does not have this attribute, leading to concern that a DC arc flash’s incident energy (IEm) could be higher, particularly for facility-level 800 VDC designs.

The foremost challenge is that there remains no universally accepted industry standard to calculate the incident energy of a DC arc flash. NFPA 70E uses an incident energy threshold of 1.2 cal/cm2 to evaluate whether PPE is required. But without an agreed-upon calculation for DC, it is difficult to determine whether such PPE is necessary.

In a July 2026 whitepaper with modeled calculations, Schneider Electric suggests that 800 VDC incident energy levels remain well below the 1.2 cal/cm2 PPE threshold. The paper acknowledges, however, that a data center’s specific architecture “strongly influences” risk. Designers should evaluate the total capacitance electrically coupled to the bus, fault current limiting techniques, and converter-controlled current sources in order to minimize arc flash risk.

What New Technology Will Support the 800 VDC Transition?

Beyond standards development, several emerging technologies are expected to play important roles in future 800 VDC deployments. As more chips are packed into a smaller footprint, engineers need a way to increase power delivery without simultaneously increasing conductor size, cooling requirements, and equipment complexity to impractical extremes. New technologies like solid-state transformers, energy storage systems, and liquid cooling are helping address this reality.

Solid-state transformers

Solid-state transformers are megawatt-scale power electronic converters capable of converting high-voltage AC directly into 800 VDC. These systems use wide-bandgap semiconductor materials like Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) to offer greater control over power flow. However, they remain in relatively early stages of commercialization, and technological gaps must be addressed before they can be widely implemented.

Energy storage systems

Energy storage systems are also becoming increasingly important. AI workloads can rapidly swing from 30% to 100% power in milliseconds, creating abrupt changes in electrical load. Energy storage systems can help smooth those fluctuations and maintain stable operation.

Cooling technologies

Cooling technologies also continue to develop as rack densities rise. Immersion cooling and other advanced thermal-management approaches are being evaluated to support the increased heat loads associated with higher power.

What 800 VDC Means for Data Center Power Connectors

As 800 VDC power architecture develops, data center power connectors must handle higher power loads than ever. These connectors are a critical part of the overall system design, connecting various ICT components such as Power Supply Units, Power Distribution Units, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, and Battery Backup Units.

However, interconnects for 800 VDC run into the same standardization gaps as other components. Because the industry is advancing so rapidly, most existing data center power connectors were not developed with 800 VDC applications in mind and are not rated to support higher voltages without overheating. A March 2026 Open Compute Project whitepaper notes that, “Currently there is no applicable standard for separable connectors in the range up to 1500 VDC and currents in the 1 kA DC range for data center applications.”

In addition to addressing the standard gap, other connector features impact the safe and successful implementation of 800 VDC. Engineers should consider whether connectors offer:

Touch-safe construction & secure latching

A touch-safe construction with secure latching helps reduce the risk of accidental contact with higher voltages.
