Many statistics emphasize this trend, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Datacenters and data transmission networks account for about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/buildings\/data-centres-and-data-transmission-networks\"> 2-3% of global electricity use<\/a>, an amount that continues to grow.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Carbon emissions associated with datacenters <a href=\"https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/news\/hidden-costs-ai-impending-energy-and-resource-strain\" target=\"_blank\">doubled<\/a> between 2017 and 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grcooling.com\/the-plane-truth-about-environmental-sustainability\/#:~:text=Airlines%20and%20Data%20Centers%20Are,human%2Dcaused)%20carbon%20pollution.&amp;text=Data%20centers%20are%20right%20up,into%20the%20atmosphere%20every%20year.\" target=\"_blank\">exceeding<\/a> the emissions from all commercial flights.&nbsp;<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Datacenter power usage is estimated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalinformationworld.com\/2023\/07\/the-energy-crunch-ai-data-centers-and.html\" target=\"_blank\">triple<\/a> by 2030, fueled by the rise of energy-hungry artificial intelligence language models.&nbsp;<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the world\u2019s reliance on datacenters expands, it is clear datacenters need to prepare for the future by investing in more efficient technologies. One potential solution that has been proposed for years is switching datacenters from alternating current (AC) power to direct current (DC) power, conserving energy by removing a series of redundant AC-DC conversions. Although the idea is not without its drawbacks, there remain significant benefits to the idea that has implications for the future sustainability of datacenters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Edison vs. Tesla: The History of the \u201cWar of the Currents\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex has-2-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AC versus DC power idea may have resurfaced in recent years, but it is not a new debate. In fact, the original \u201cwar of the currents\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/war-currents-ac-vs-dc-power\" target=\"_blank\">occurred<\/a> in the late 1800s between inventors Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Edison promoted direct current, while Tesla and his industrialist backer George Westinghouse promoted alternating current. Both sides sought to demonstrate their invention was better and competed over work contracts. DC power had a couple of major disadvantages, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Distance: DC power was much <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5698700\/current-war-real-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">harder<\/a> to transport over great distances without major power loss, requiring power stations to be located within a mile of the buildings they powered.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Price: Westinghouse won the World\u2019s Fair contract primarily because his AC power contract asked for about $150,000 less than Edison\u2019s proposal.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Voltage Changes: Unlike AC, the voltage with DC power could not be easily stepped up or down via a transformer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite Edison\u2019s best efforts, these drawbacks were too much for DC to overcome. By the time Westinghouse won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/what-was-the-war-of-the-currents\" target=\"_blank\">contract<\/a> to generate power from Niagara Falls in 1896, even Edison\u2019s backer, General Electric, had abandoned DC for AC. For over a century, AC current was firmly established as the predominant power current in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>AC vs. DC in Today\u2019s Datacenters<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, DC power is making a bit of a comeback. Computers, phones, TVs, and LEDs, along with sustainable energy sources like solar and wind, all run on DC power. Advances in technology, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/war-currents-ac-vs-dc-power\" target=\"_blank\">adoption<\/a> of high voltage direct current (HVDC) lines, can transport DC current longer distances with less energy loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hidden Costs of AC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Datacenters today still generally rely on AC to power their systems. However, the backup batteries that sustain the datacenter in the event of a power interruption run on DC power. This situation requires a complex series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenters.com\/news\/data-center-power-how-ac-and-dc-power-are-used-in-data-centers\" target=\"_blank\">conversions<\/a> within the datacenter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">First, power enters the datacenter as AC power and goes through a rectifier that changes it to DC.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Then, power runs through the Uninterruptible Power Supply (the backup batteries) as DC power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Finally, power goes through an inverter that converts it back to AC to feed the rest of the datacenter system.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These numerous conversions are inefficient and waste energy, which has sparked some interest in developing fully DC-powered datacenters. In a DC datacenter, only one conversion is needed: taking the AC power provided by the electrical grid and changing it to DC. The amount of energy conservation would be significant. Studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledsmagazine.com\/connected-ssl-controls\/article\/14282125\/what-can-dc-power-do-for-your-building\" target=\"_blank\">shown<\/a> that in AC datacenters with an isolation transformer, adopting a DC system would save approximately 6.1% in energy costs alone.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--032-064);\" class=\"ideal-layout ideal-content-with-background is-style-surface-brand alignwide ideal-content-with-background is-style-surface-brand wp-block-ideal-layout\">\n\t<div class=\"ideal-layout__inner alignwide\">\n\t\t<div class=\"ideal-layout__section ideal-layout__section--1 wp-block-ideal-layout-section\">\n\t<div class=\"ideal-layout__section-inner content-flow\">\n\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3\"><b>Benefits of DC-Powered Datacenters<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FS<\/a>, a company involved in the fiber optic networking industry, additional&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/community.fs.com\/blog\/direct-current-dc-power-is-it-the-new-normal-for-data-centers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">benefits<\/a>&nbsp;of adopting DC-powered datacenters include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Material Cost Savings: DC systems use less copper than AC systems and do not require the use of rectifiers and transformers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Reduced Space: With less conversions needed, DC systems require less space to operate, leaving more room within the datacenter for server racks or cooling equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Sustainability: As datacenters strive to reduce their carbon footprint and energy consumption, DC systems make it much&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clouglobal.com\/ac-vs-dc-which-system-is-better-suited-for-modern-energy-needs\/#:~:text=DC%20is%20highly%20suitable%20for,as%20they%20produce%20DC%20power.&amp;text=Storage%20and%20retrieval%20of%20electrical,necessary%20when%20storing%20AC%20power.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easier<\/a>&nbsp;to integrate renewable energy sources like solar or fuel cells.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Design Simplicity: DC systems have a simpler design, with fewer components and points of failure than AC.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--032-064)\">However, the adoption of DC power in datacenters is not without <a href=\"https:\/\/community.fs.com\/blog\/direct-current-dc-power-is-it-the-new-normal-for-data-centers.html\" target=\"_blank\">challenges<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\">Lack of Standards: DC power systems do not have as many established industry standards as AC, including for electrical voltages, arc flash, and grounding. This requires each system to be engineered individually, increasing costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Lack of Industry Knowledge: Datacenter owners, operators, and contractors are not as familiar with DC power.&nbsp;<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Restructuring Cost: Swapping existing datacenter infrastructure from AC to DC power is costly.&nbsp;<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Other DC Building Resources: Other building systems, such as air conditioning and fire protection systems, would ideally need to be DC to run in DC-powered datacenters. This graphic highlights some of the primary considerations.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Datacenters: A Booming Industry<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each datacenter must weigh these costs and benefits when considering a DC-powered system. Regardless of their decision, other sustainability and efficiency concerns are only going to grow alongside the datacenter industry itself. Companies are increasingly investing staggering amounts of resources and research into datacenters, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Microsoft is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3653256\/microsoft-to-establish-its-largest-data-centre-in-hyderabad.html\" target=\"_blank\">building<\/a> a new, expansive datacenter in Hyderabad, India and intends to invest about $2 billion into the region.&nbsp;<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Chip-maker Nvidia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nvidia-nvda-q1-earnings-report-2024-132e3559\" target=\"_blank\">selling<\/a> their datacenter AI technologies at astounding rates; the company\u2019s revenue <a href=\"https:\/\/nvidianews.nvidia.com\/news\/nvidia-announces-financial-results-for-first-quarter-fiscal-2024\" target=\"_blank\">outlook<\/a> for the second quarter of 2024 alone is $11 billion.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-list-item\"><p>Google recently announced <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/google-ohio-data-centers-technology-0fa42a92e4bb967afeba9c11070620ed\" target=\"_blank\">plans<\/a> to build two more datacenters in Columbus, Ohio to power its AI technology, bringing the company\u2019s total datacenter investment in the state to more than $2 billion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These investments will only increase the need for efficient and compact datacenter technologies that can handle large power demands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--024-040);margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--032-064);\" class=\"ideal-layout ideal-content-with-background is-style-surface-brand alignwide ideal-content-with-background is-style-surface-brand wp-block-ideal-layout\">\n\t<div class=\"ideal-layout__inner alignwide\">\n\t\t<div class=\"ideal-layout__section ideal-layout__section--1 wp-block-ideal-layout-section\">\n\t<div class=\"ideal-layout__section-inner content-flow\">\n\t\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3\"><b>An Efficient Solution for both AC and DC: The Saf-D-Grid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to this growing need, Anderson Power developed a versatile power connector called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andersonpower.com\/en-in\/product-lines\/saf-d-grid\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saf-D-Grid<\/a>&nbsp;in 2009.
